Swine & Dairy
Dairy and swine operations face difficulties and expense in dealing with high nutrient waste.
In the past, regulations have limited the levels of nitrogen that can be applied to surrounding cropland, but not of phosphorus. However, new federal rules also prohibit over-application of phosphorus.
Some farms will have to reduce phosphorus application by half by either doubling irrigated acreage, or removing phosphorus from wastewater.
Doubling irrigated acreage is very expensive and often impossible. Other options for removing phosphorus from wastewater generate large volumes of sludge that are expensive to handle, ship, and dispose of.
The Multiform Harvest system is a practical and economic solution to these problems. The system is typically installed on the wastewater stream just prior to irrigation in order to reduce the phosphorus content of that stream to the level required for balance with the crops' uptake of phosphorus. The extracted phosphorus, which is in the form of struvite, is harvested from the system in a solid granular form that is quick to drain and dry and can be transported easily.
