Nitrogen
Crops require nitrogen in the largest amount of any of the essential nutrients with the exception of carbon, hydrogen and oxygen.
For this reason, nitrogen is the nutrient applied in largest amounts in most fertilization programs. It is a vital constituent of chlorophyll, amino acids and proteins and nucleic acids as well as enzymes and vitamins which catalyze metabolic reactions within the plant.
Nitrogen is an integral part of the enzyme rubisco (“RuBisCO”), which fixes CO2 into organic compounds in photosynthesis and other assimilation processes required for normal growth. This helps plants with rapid growth, increasing seed and fruit production and improving the quality of leaf and forage crops.
